On a Question of Kaplansky Ii
نویسنده
چکیده
There is a question attributed to Irving Kaplansky concerning the solvability of the quadratic equation x2 − py2 = a in the case that the prime p = a2 + (2b)2. This question was answered in the affirmative by Mollin [1], although according to [3], this result is implicit in the work of Gauss and Legendre. The proof appearing in [1] was later simplified in [4], and it was also shown therein that Kaplansky’s question was a special case of a more general result. Using the method of proof in [4], Mollin [2] has recently extended the results of [4], but upon further consideration, it appears that there is a more general phenomenon occurring, and also, that one of the assumptions in the main theorem of [2] is unnecessary. In this paper we prove this generalization, and eliminate one of the assumptions stated in the main result of [2]. The proof is again based on the method described in [4].

متن کاملThe Kaplansky Test Problems for א1-separable Groups
We answer a long-standing open question by proving in ordinary set theory, ZFC, that the Kaplansky test problems have negative answers for א1-separable abelian groups of cardinality א1. In fact, there is an א1-separable abelian group M such that M is isomorphic to M ⊕M ⊕M but not to M ⊕M . We also derive some relevant information about the endomorphism ring of M .
متن کاملKaplansky Classes and Derived Categories
We put a monoidal model category structure on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves over a quasi-compact and semiseparated scheme X. The approach generalizes and simplifies the method used by the author in [Gil04] and [Gil06] to build monoidal model structures on the category of chain complexes of modules over a ring and chain complexes of sheaves over a ringed space. Indeed...
متن کاملThe Assyrian Itineraries in the Zagros during the reign of Sargon II (6th and 8th campaigns) and the question about the correlation between Toponymy and Geography
Among the many Assyrian written sources and inscriptions some texts report the military expeditions of the kings of Assyria. These accounts, the so-called Itineraries texts, describe in details the different stops of the armies through territories outside the Assyrian heartland. With regard to the Zagros area, the reports mention different long and ruthless campaigns undertaken by some Assyrian...
متن کاملStrong Topological Regularity and Weak Regularity of Banach Algebras
In this article we study two different generalizations of von Neumann regularity, namely strong topological regularity and weak regularity, in the Banach algebra context. We show that both are hereditary properties and under certain assumptions, weak regularity implies strong topological regularity. Then we consider strong topological regularity of certain concrete algebras. Moreover we obtain ...
